What programs do I need to use the CrHear site and where do I get them?

Just click on one of the links below to bring you to the various companies that supply the neccessary FREE software. Generally they are easy to download and install. After installation use CrHear to find audio/video channels. The software will automatically start when you click an icon and after a few seconds you'll be humming along. Its best to keep your software updated - if not some channels won't play on your computer. Some channels now use new technology like Vorbis & OGG - use the MP3 player for these.

Get Windows Media Player Get Real Audio Player Get Winamp

"The connection to the server could not be established" - What does it mean?

Its probably caused by bottlenecks in internet traffic - it means that there is a problem connecting to the radio/tv source. If it happens a lot, it could mean that your internet supplier (ISP - Internet Service Provider) has problems.

What does "buffering" mean?

Buffering means "stocking up" - you store up a few seconds of audio/video in your computer - the internet sometimes has delays and the buffer is then used up to avoid interruptions - the buffering is usually "invisible" - you only notice it when the internet delay is bigger than the buffer - then you'll get a break in transmission.

Some links are broken or only work some of the time - Why?

The majority of stations broadcast 24 hours a day but some are "on-air" for only a few hours a day.
We regularly verify the ouput of our listed stations - if they become unreliable, we remove them.

"Do you want to download the file or play it?"- What does this mean?

Just click "play" - don't download the file - the file will then play. If you have the option, tell your software to always play rather than download.

What does all the channel information mean?

Sample of Search Results

We identify the channel name (n heavy print, as above if you can access its website), the City/State or Country as well as the type of audio file and its speed.

What sound or video speed should I select?

Generally, you will have substantial buffering problems if you select a speed greater than that of your type of connection. The speed is the reliable maximum achieved over a period of constant monitoring by CrHear - many stations use software that automatically adjusts to the maximum connection speed that you have - you may get a different speed than us. The typical speeds are:

Telephone:
28K modem - 20k
56k modem - 40k
ISDN - 90k
Cable/ADSL - all

Absolutely - we can confirm this in writing if required!

Click where you see "CrHear a site not listed? - click to tell us" - its below the blue "SEARCH...." menu on every page.

I want to contact a radio/TV station about a program - how?

First, please DON'T contact CrHear - if we have provided a site link, try it - other than that you'll just have to do a search on the internet.
